Dig Deep For The Cleaners

Posted in Tubeworker's blog on ,

RMT is apparently moving closer to organising a strike of cleaners demanding better pay and conditions. Mind you, the union has been "moving towards a strike" for so long now that holding your breath is probably not a good idea.

To maximise the effectiveness of the action when it does happen, RMT should give strike pay to the cleaners, who struggle by on such low wages that they would find this sustenance essential. Better-paid grades on the Underground (ie. all other grades!) should contribute to a strike fund, and the union should put out a call to the wider trade union movement and the general public to donate too.

There is a lot of sympathy for the cleaners' plight - some of it quite paternalistic, even patronising - and it is high time for that sympathy to be turned into hard cash. We don't want Tube cleaners to suffer in dignified silence, nor do we want the union to march them up the hill only to march them down again: we want them to win!
