Tough On Kids, Tough On the Causes of Kids! (1997)

Labour's Shadow Home Secretary, Jack Straw, recently proposed a curfew on children. He opened his heart and mind to Workers Liberty reporter Patrick Avakuum. --- AS Tony Blair's team waits impatiently to cross the floor of the House of Commons and show that they can outdo the Tories, Jack Straw, Labour's Shadow Home Secretary has emerged as an unexpected Front Bench star in this brilliant company. For a long time Straw — "straw in his name, straw in his mouth, straw between his ears" as someone once unkindly said —was regarded as the village idiot of the Front Bench. Not any more. Straw has...

Solidarity with Lambeth College strikers!

Picket lines in Brixton and Clapham remained strong this week, as teaching staff at Lambeth College continue their strike. Wednesday 11 June and Thursday 12 June will see Unison members strike alongside their brothers and sisters in the University and College Union (UCU). College workers are striking against a contract brought in by the college from April for new staff only, which will mean they work longer hours, will work during the traditional college holidays, and will have less sick pay. UCU members began an indefinite strike on 3 June. Students have received text messages telling them to...

NATFHE members at Southwark College, south London, began an all out strike against compulsory redundancies on Tuesday 14th March. This is the diary of one striker. Article

Organising academics as workers

Academics love nothing more than having a moan about the terrible state of the neo-liberal university. We tend to be slightly less enthusiastic when it comes to getting up from our desks and doing something about it. This has begun to change, however, as pockets of resistance have begun to emerge at several different British universities in the last few years. An excellent discussion among Marxist academics at the 2013 conference of the "Historical Materialism" journal pointed to various different forums in which ‘knowledge workers’ might and should resist privatisation. From building...

12,000 teachers march in London

12,000 joined the march in London (police figures) on 17 October, when teachers struck there and across other regions over pay, workload, and pensions. Marchers were keen to see the leaders of the two big teachers' union, NUT and NASUWT, name the day for a further national strike in November.

Support LeSoCo workers' strike for jobs!

The Floristry and Science departments at LeSoCo (Lewisham and Southwark College) are at risk of closure. These departments have provided our community with excellent services for many, many years. What’s more, the college is facing 28 full-time job cuts across the college. Access provision is also under threat and our Learner Services department is now facing a restructure. We are opposed to all compulsory redundancies. Following large-scale support for strike action (86%) and action short of a strike (96%) at LeSoCo, we are taking an hour's strike action next on 17 July over the continuing...

Job cuts threat at Lambeth College

Bosses at Lambeth College in south London could cut make 40 workers redundant as part of a cuts plan to save nearly £4 million. In a statement, the college management said it had begun a consultation with the 97 staff members who could be affected by the cuts, which it says "could potentially result in 30-40 redundancies." Unions at the college are organising against cuts, with a demonstration planned for Saturday 15 June. Activists in both Unison and the University and College Union say they will be pushing for strikes. An activist from local anti-cuts campaign Lambeth Save Our Services said...
