Sheffield activists ruin Air Marshall's evening

Judging by the level of security they put on for the event, University of Sheffield management were obviously expecting a lecture on "the use of military force and the employment of air power" - delivered by RAF top-brass, professional warmonger and all-round ruling class wanker Air Marshall Stuart Peach CBE - to attract a few troublemakers.

And attract them it did; members of a variety of revolutionary activist organisations collaborated to stage an little intervention into the lecture. We had initially planned to occupy the stage in order to make a clear speech about our perspective; we were all agreed that basic anti-militarism and opposition to the university's involvment in the arms industry, as well as questions of university democracy (students get no say in who is invited to these lectures) were our starting point in terms of why were making our presence felt.

However, when we found out that the police presence was greater than anticipated we decided to go for a hit-and-run job instead. So after we had set off around 30 rape alarms and detonated a couple of stink-bombs, we hot footed it away from the uni security guards and cops on our tail to a safe point where we could discuss how to follow the action up. Unfortunately one comrade from the Anarchist Federation was arrested, and although they were pointlessly detained for several hours by the police they were eventually released without charge.

There are now plans to form a Sheffield Activist Network to help coordinate similar action in the future. Workers' Liberty members on campus will be actively involved so watch this space for more info.
