Israel-Palestine, Islamism and the Populist Left-wing

Since the very first day, when Hamas brutally acted in an inhumane way against unarmed civilians, it’s intuitive that Israel will response with more inhumane war crimes. Given the current Israeli right-wing government with its apartheid history, it’s not to be surprised that the response hits unarmed civilians too. When it comes to a problem, everyone knows the problem is the issue. So, the criticism should be emphasised more to the proposed or self-claimed alternative. Instead of calling for class-solidarity or intersectional solidarity between Israeli and Palestinians or at least peace...

Turning things round in Labour

Keir Starmer has had a 15 to 20% poll lead over the Tories for a year, since the Liz Truss episode in September-October 2022. As with Blair in 1994-97, many people in the labour movement will go along with him if only not to rock a boat which could end a decade and a half of Tory rule. But an audible left-wing minority voice in 2023 will be a vital marker for the future. We are realistic about this. A lot of the “soft left” and “centre”, even people like Neal Lawson and Jon Cruddas, are scornful of Starmer. We thought maybe they would push him somewhat off his Blair-tribute path before now. It...

The left in Ukraine

Workers’ Liberty members met with members of Sotsialny Rukh (SR — Social Movement) in Lviv and Kyiv during our visit to Ukraine in August 2023. SR emerged from the regrouping of (and splits from) the left which took place around the Maidan Revolution of Dignity in late 2013 and early 2014. It was formally launched in 2015 and now has functioning branches in three Ukrainian cities, plus members in others. SR defines itself as “a Ukrainian political organisation and initiative towards the legal registration of a left political party based on the principles of democratic anti-capitalism, feminism...

Against Putin: victory to Ukraine!

Some supporters of Ukraine at Durham Miners' Gala (8 July). On the right are Ukrainian trade unionists Oksana and Pavlo Holota with an NGPU miners' union flag brought specially from Ukraine It is now slightly more than 500 days since Putin launched Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Putin’s imperialist war, launched with the intention of abolishing Ukraine as an independent entity, to subordinate Ukraine to Russian political power, has been a disaster for not only the Ukrainian people, but for the Russians too. The war has also broken down important global economic bonds, especially in...

Sanders denounces Biden-Republican deal

On Thursday 1 June the US Senate approved a budget deal negotiated between President Biden and Republican leaders in order to approve an increase in the USA’s federal debt ceiling. Bernie Sanders voted against, saying: At a time when climate change is, by far, the most existential threat facing our country and the entire world I cannot, in good conscience, vote for a bill that makes it easier for fossil fuel companies to pollute and destroy the planet by fast-tracking the disastrous Mountain Valley Pipeline. When the future of the world is literally at stake we must have the courage to stand...

Lutte Ouvrière fête 2023

Eleven activists and friends of Workers’ Liberty made the journey to the annual fête organised by the French revolutionary socialist organisation Lutte Ouvrière in parkland near Paris on 27-29 May. This year, good weather made the attendance higher than the usual 20,000 or so. Many come to enjoy the food stalls, children’s games, film showings, and talks on everything from pre-history or life in the Middle Ages through to many scientific topics, and there are also many political debates and talks in areas set aside for “forums”. Workers’ Liberty ran a forum (well-attended given its 9am Sunday...

France: power in the streets

The use of 49-3 [the government pushing through pension changes over the heads of parliament] didn’t have the effect that the government had hoped for: that people would see it as a defeat and as an end.

Ukrainian socialists speak in UK

Brie and Olenka, two young socialist feminists and members of the Ukrainian left party, Sotsialny Rukh (Social Movement), recently toured the UK speaking at meetings and talking to activists. The comrades have been hosted by Workers’ Liberty and have addressed meetings in Sheffield, Nottingham, Liverpool and Brighton. Along the way they have discussed with Labour politicians, feminist activists, journalists and trade unionists. Workers’ Liberty believe it is important to listen to the authentic voice of the left in Ukraine, which has been little-heard in the UK. The Ukrainian left and unions...
