Sky "we'll leave" threats scupper union vote

By a BECTU member Outrageous management bullying at Rupert Murdoch's Sky television company has culminated in a vote against union recognition at the firm's Livingston call centre. Last year, more than 50% of the 466 staff in the Livingston sales centre signed a petition supporting union recognition. Mirror Group journalists take action

More than 100 National Union of Journalists members took strike action on 25 July and 1 August at the Trinity Mirror-owned Newcastle Chronicle and Journal series as part of their fight for a fair wage. Under the latest proposals graduate trainees at the group will start on £12,250 per year - compared to a reported (in the Daily Mirror) average graduate starting salary of £19,000. The minimum rate for journalists is £17,500. The strike at Greater Manchester Weekly Newspapers (North) - part of Guardian Media - is over. Here are the details of the settlement. The new starting rate for trainees is £13,060 - a rise of 24.5 percent on the previous minimum, and a rise of more than 8 percent on the previous rate for graduates with pre-entry qualifications. Trainees in their second year will receive £14,255 - a rise of at least 5 percent. Trainees will also receive a one-off payment of £280. The National Union of Journalists is asking trade unionists to boycott Guardian Media's daily titles - the Guardian, Manchester Evening News, and Reading Evening Post - on days when NUJ members on the company's weeklies in the North-West are striking against union derecognition. The next strike is due to run from 30 April to 8 May.
