Last week thousands of hotel workers and their allies flooded Union Square in San Francisco for a unity rally. Workers at four San Francisco hotels went on strike two weeks ago and hotel operators responded by locking out employees at 10 other locations last Friday. The lockout has been extended to the other four hotels. The union, Unite Here Local 2, represents about 8,000 workers at 60 San Francisco hotels. Some 4,000 cooks, room cleaners, dishwashers, bellmen, servers and switchboard operators are affected by the strike and lockout involving the 14 hotels.

In Atlantic City 10,000 casino hotel workers are continuing their strike at seven casinos, in what has become the longest work stoppage in Unite Here Local 54’s history. A major demonstration by the union was planned for 16 October to take place at all seven casinos where the workers are on strike.

Strikes at three New York City airport hotels have entered their fourth week, as workers of the Crowne Plaza LaGuardia, Holiday Inn JFK, and Hampton Inn JFK maintained daily picket lines at the three hotels. Workers went out on strike on 22 September due to charges of unfair labour practices by the hotels’ owners and management. Several major regular customers have left the hotels since the strike began.
