Local TUCs, uniting workers from different trade unions across a city / town / borough

Organise to support McDonnell!

Organise local meetings ON 18 October a meeting for John McDonnell's campaign at the Hackney Empire, with McDonnell speaking alongside leading radical trade unionists, attracted over 100 people. The meeting, co-sponsored by Hackney Trades Union Council and the Labour party's Leabridge branch, was pitched towards rank-and-file union activists and Labour party members who wanted to discuss an urgently needed alternative to Blairism; that of working-class political representation. It is vital for McDonnell's campaign, particularly given a lack of resources, that local activists build rank-and...

Leafleting to save the East London Line

Hackney TUC went out leafleting against East London Line privatisation earlier this evening. RMT will be leafleting on Tuesday 7th and Thursday 9th November at Whitechapel, Canada Water and Surrey Quays stations, from 16:00.

Get down there and help.

JMcD in Hackney

Last night's Hackney TUC / Leabridge Labour Party meeting with John McDonnell was packed. I couldn't go, as I still languish at home getting used to the falsie. But I spoke to a few people afterwards, and the feeling was generally very positive.

Those who attended the meeting - including fellow...

Grunwick 30 years on

Faryal Velmi reports on the Grunwick commemoration event held by Brent Trades Council on 17 September. About 200 people heard Grunwick strike leader Jayaben Desai relive some of the proudest and the most disappointing moments of that battle. Desai now well into her seventies, spoke of what she saw as a sense of duty. “It was what I had to do, and I hope that you would do the same.” Jack Dromey, now TGWU deputy general secretary but then secretary of Brent TUC, described the overwhelming solidarity built between the Grunwick workers and trade unionists from many other industries, as local...

Stop East London Line privatisation

Around 50 people packed a meeting organised by Hackney TUC to launch a local campaign against the privatisation of the East London Line. The Line - which currently does not serve Hackney - is due to be extended in time for the 2012 Olympics, but will be sold off to private contractors. Stagecoach and National Express are amongst the list of "preferred bidders". Human rights lawyer Louise Christian - who represented the families of the victims of the Hatfield and Potters Bar rail crashes - spoke, as did Jerry Wines (TSSA Regional Organiser) and Jason Humphreys (local RMT rep for ELL staff)...

When the "left" campaigns against the workers' movement...

Respect and the SWP in Cambridge have launched a veritable campaign against any support for the Iraqi workers' movement and for Iraqi trade unionists facing murder threats. By Stan Crooke At the March meeting of Cambridge Trades Council I moved the following motion on behalf of my Amicus branch: “1) Cambridge and District Trades Union Council welcomes: a) the conference organised by the TUC on 14th February in support of Iraqi trade unions, attended by representatives of the Iraqi Railway and Aviation Union (IFTU), the Journalists Union, the Teachers Union, the Federation of Workers Councils...

Anything but uncontroversial

The January meeting of Cambridge Trades Union Council (CTUC) passed the following motion: “Cambridge Trades Council condemns the murder of Iraqi trade unionist Hadi Salih [pictured], the murderers of Hadi Salih, and the apologists for the murder and murderers of Hadi Salih.” “Cambridge Trades Council resolves to produce and circulate a further leaflet calling for support for Iraqi trade unionists which covers: the attacks on, and murders of, Iraqi trade unionists and workers; recent developments in the Iraqi trade union movement; support for Iraqi trade unions from UK unions.” When the motion...
